TEXILA UNIVERSITY WINS 2025 ZRA HACKATHON

Texila University’s Project Veil has won the grand prize of the 2025 Hackathon competition organized by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

The victory demonstrates Texila University’s commitment to enhancing revenue collection and optimizing tax administration through its creative whistle-blower innovation.

ZRA organised a hackathon to provide participants with mentorship, practical exposure and the opportunity to contribute to national development through technology.

ZRA Commissioner General, Dingani Banda, said tax administration is being reshaped by digital solutions, artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics to simplify compliance for taxpayers.

He said this in a speech read for him by ZRA Acting Commissioner, Business Facilitation, Yvonne Mwanza.

“This day is not just about showcasing digital innovation; it symbolizes a new chapter where the Authority and academia collaborate to build systems that safeguard national revenue” he said.

Mr. Banda, encouraged innovators to continue creating digital solutions that support creativity across the country.

And ZRA Director of Information Communications and Technology (ICT), Daniel Kalunga, who was represented by Assistant Director Mweene Chijikwa, said the Hackathon addressed real life tax challenges making it easy to improve tax administration and compliance.

Texila University emerged victorious, securing K100,000, while Eden University claimed second place with K70,000. Mulungushi University followed in third place, walking away with K40,000.

Other universities that secured a place in the final stage of the competition were Cavendish University, Copperbelt University (CBU), Information Communication University (ICU), Mukuba University and Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies University (ZCAS) and each received K10,000.

The Hackathon competition brought together eight universities from across the country, providing a platform for students to share their innovative ideas and tackle today’s tax challenges.
