The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) seized a contained truck in Kazungula, carrying 2100 cases translating to 25,200 bottles of smuggled alcoholic beverages with revenue loss of over K7.7 million.
The seizure of the truck happened on 3rd October, 2025, when the truck with entered the Kazungula One top Border Post (OSBP) Customs Control Zone, upon which the driver presented documents indicating that the consignment had 1767 packages of Panel Boards, Rain Boots, Gloves and Dust Bits.
However, the vigilance of the ZRA staff compelled the scanning of the truck and it was discovered that the truck was laden with alcohol destined for Lusaka.
The Authority also discovered that the importer’s Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) is not registered for any taxes.
Both the truck and alcohol have been seized pursuant to sections Section 141 and 159 of the Customs and Excise Act.
The broader impact of smugglingg not only harms the economy but creates safety risks. Smuggling hurts honest traders who follow the rules, and they deserve protection. Therefore, ZRA is cracking down on smuggling and tax evasion methods used. We are determined to combat this illegal activity and we would like to urge the public to report smuggling activities. Smuggling is detrimental to everyone. We need to work together to protect the economy and ensure fair trade.
It is possible to make profits legally. Many traders operate properly and make profit. The first thing we encourage traders to do is avoid smuggling. Secondly, report smugglers. Those who import goods legitimately cannot compete fairly with smugglers. Sharing information will help create a level playing field, allowing all traders to prosper honestly.
No one is unaware of the benefits of taxes. If we have good roads, hospitals, schools, bursaries for students in universities, it is all because of taxes. Smugglers hinder the country’s development. It is like cutting a branch you are sitting on. Moreover, while someone may smuggle once, will be caught on the second attempt. The resources and cooperation with citizens are in place to ensure this.
As the holiday season approaches, ZRA is calling for vigilance against smuggled alcoholic beverages and other goods because smugglers are always attempting to bring in goods and make profit without paying duties and taxes.
The Authority wants to make it clear that anyone caught smuggling faces severe penalties and possible prosecution.
