The Zambia Revenue Authority conducted a taxpayer education session with 390 majorettes in the Lusaka Showgrounds.
Speaking today in the Lusaka Showgrounds, ZRA Corporate Communications Manager, Oliver Nzala said as the main sponsor for the majorettes that entertain the Agricultural and Commercial Showgoers, the Authority has taken the initiative to impart tax knowledge in the young boys and girls aged between 8-19 years.
“We have noted with concern that while most taxpayers and learners have basic knowledge in taxation, there are repeated gaps in terms of meaning, sources, uses and administration of tax. Therefore, in 2023, the Authority embarked on a mission to educate, sensitize and demystify taxation to the public and enhance voluntary compliance by launching the Know Your Tax Quiz for University and College students. In 2024, we launched the Smart Voices Debate for secondary schools”, Mr. Nzala added.
Today’s engagement with these young girls with different backgrounds and levels of understanding issues, is in a bid to nurture a tax paying culture from an early age. ZRA wants to use every platform to educate Zambians.
By actively engaging with young people and promoting tax literacy, the ZRA aims to foster a culture of tax compliance and responsibility among the next generation.
ZRA leverages online platforms, such as their website, Atingi and social media, to disseminate tax education materials and engage with a wider audience of young people.
The tax system is the main driver of economic growth for any nation. Without adequate tax revenue a nation can neither provide public utilities such as roads, education and health care nor sustain its wage bill. The aim is to foster an overall culture of voluntary tax compliance based on rights and responsibilities.
